چکیده

The United States faces the major dilemma of meeting energy demands while simultaneously reducing the environmental consequences of energy production. How we resolve this dilemma has implications for the nation’s economy, environment and energy security. One of the many methods proposed for addressing this challenge is using the wind resource available off the coast of the United States to generate electricity. The offshore wind resources in the coastal regions of the United States are vast and often located near heavily populated areas where electricity demand is high. Building wind turbines1 offshore presents many environmental, social, technical and economic challenges2. This issue brief focuses on the consequences — both positive and negative — that wind farms could have on the coastal environment of West Michigan.

A semi-automated approach to generate 4D/5D BIM models for evaluating different offshore oil and gas platform decommissioning options

Background: Offshore oil and gas platforms generally have a lifetime of 30 to 40 years, and platform decommissioning is a major issue because many of the existing offshore oil and gas platforms are reaching the end of their service life. There are many possible options for decommissioning offshore oil and gas platforms, and each decommissioning option can be implemented using different methods ...

Renewables-to-reefs? - Decommissioning options for the offshore wind power industry.

The offshore wind power industry is relatively new but increasing globally, hence it is important that the whole life-cycle is managed. The construction-operation-decommissioning cycle is likely to take 20-30 years and whilst decommissioning may not be undertaken for many years, its management needs to be addressed in both current and future marine management regimes. This can be defined within...

Nuclear Decommissioning and Organisational Reliability: Involving Subcontractors in Collective Action

The concept of organisational reliability is at the heart of the safety of at-risk systems. Many studies have been conducted in the nuclear industry; all emphasise the study of plants in normal, daily operation or during shutdowns. However, decommissioning, whether ongoing or planned, places a sharp focus on the question. This is because, on the one hand operating companies make significant cha...
